Warning signs
Play may have stopped being fun if you:
- spend more on coin packages than you planned, again and again
- buy more coins to win back what you spent
- hide how much you play or spend from people close to you
- borrow, or skip bills, to buy coins
- lose sleep, or miss work or time with family, to play
- feel low, restless or angry when you can't play
- have tried to cut back and could not
One sign is a reason to pause. Several are a reason to call the helpline. The National Council on Problem Gambling has a short self-assessment (opens in a new tab) you can take in private.
Set your limits before you play
- Decide what you can afford to spend each week or month, and stop there.
- Set a time limit for each session.
- Never buy coins to win back what you have spent.
- Don't play when you are upset, tired or drinking.
- Keep it one hobby among others.
- No one is promised a prize. A coin package costs money like any other purchase. Don't play to fix a money problem.
Tools the casinos give you
Many sweepstakes casinos offer some of these, and what each offers varies. Look in your account settings, or ask the casino's support team.
- Purchase limits: a cap on how much you can spend on coin packages in a day, week or month.
- Time-outs: a break when you can't log in.
- Session reminders: a message that tells you how long you have been playing.
- Play and purchase history: a record of what you have spent.
- Self-exclusion: a longer or permanent block on your account (see below).
Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion means asking a casino to close or block your account for a set time, or for good. The casino's own terms decide whether a block can be lifted early.
We know of no single list that covers every sweepstakes casino. State self-exclusion programs may not cover sweepstakes casinos, so check the program's own rules, and ask each casino you use to exclude you.
Apps such as Gamban (opens in a new tab) or BetBlocker (opens in a new tab) (BetBlocker is free) block gaming sites on your own devices. You can also ask your bank whether it can block gaming purchases on your card. We don't endorse any of these. They are options.
