What is a sweepstakes casino in plain English?

A sweepstakes casino is a coin-based casino-style game site where one coin is for fun and the other can lead to a prize. Gold Coins (GC) are for play only. Sweeps Coins (SC) are the ones that matter.

SC you win can be redeemed for prizes such as gift cards or a bank transfer, after the casino’s playthrough and ID check.

You never have to buy anything to play. Free SC come from a sign-up offer, a daily login offer, or a free entry by mail or written request. That third option is the alternative method of entry.

Gold Coin packages are optional, and Sweeps Coins usually come free with a purchase anyway. But no prize is ever promised.

The wider term is social casino. Sweepstakes casinos are the kind with a prize coin. If you want to see how the options stack up, compare sweepstakes casinos.

Gold Coins vs Sweeps Coins: the two-coin rule

Each casino runs on 2 coins, and they do different jobs.

Gold Coins (GC) are for fun play only. You can buy packages or get them free, but you can never redeem them. Some casinos rename them: Crown Coins calls them Crown Coins (CC), WOW Vegas calls them WOW Coins.

Sweeps Coins (SC) are the ones that matter for prizes. You never buy them on their own. They come free with Gold Coin packages, from sign-up and daily login offers, or by mail-in request.

Where a casino states a rate, 1 SC equals $1 of prize value once played through. Cider, Lavish Luck, SpinQuest and Zula state it. Not every casino does.

Here’s what that looks like at sign-up:

  • Crown Coins offers 100,000 Crown Coins plus 2 free SC with no purchase (checked Nov 3, 2026).
  • WOW Vegas offers 250,000 WOW Coins plus 5 SC over 3 days, also no purchase (checked Sep 21, 2026).

100,000 and 250,000 Gold-type coins sound impressive. Against 2 and 5 SC, they’re just fun play. Only the SC can ever lead to a prize.

Why sweepstakes casinos are available in most US states

These sites say they run as sweepstakes promotions. No purchase is necessary, and a free way to get Sweeps Coins always exists.

Two questions stay separate here.

First, what a state’s law or regulator has done. Our state tracker covers all 50 states and DC, checked Sep 21, 2026 and still current Nov 4, 2026.

  • 10 states ban sweepstakes casinos by statute
  • 15 have regulator or Attorney General enforcement
  • 3 have a bill pending
  • 2 had a bill fail or get vetoed
  • 21 with no specific action found

Each state page names the law or action and its date.

Second, whether a given casino accepts players in your state. Each casino sets its own list. It can be longer or shorter than the state bans.

Crown Coins blocks 6 states entirely and allows only Crown Coins play, no Sweeps Coins, in 5 more. That comes from its help center, checked Nov 3, 2026.

LoneStar excludes 14 states in its sweepstakes rules version 1.9, dated Nov 1, 2026. We checked Nov 3, 2026.

Casinos change the states they accept. Check the casino’s own terms before you sign up.

This is information, not legal advice. If it matters to you, read the law or ask a lawyer in your state.

How you turn Sweeps Coins into a prize

Redeeming your Sweeps Coins takes 4 steps.

  1. Play them through. Your SC must be played at least once (1x) before you can redeem them. Cider states 1x but may require up to 20x at its discretion (Cider terms, checked Sep 21, 2026).

  2. Reach the minimum. Crown Coins asks for 50 SC (help center, checked Nov 3, 2026). WOW Vegas also asks for 50 SC (checked Sep 21, 2026). Cider wants 100 SC. LoneStar sets $45 for gift cards and $100 for other prizes (LoneStar sweepstakes rules, checked Nov 3, 2026).

  3. Pass the ID check. Casinos verify who you are before a prize is sent. The next section covers which documents to have ready.

  4. Choose a method. Crown Coins lists bank transfer to a US bank account (IBT or ACH), Skrill, and a prepaid virtual card sent by email (help center, checked Nov 3, 2026). See the Crown Coins redemption page for its full list, or LoneStar redemption for its options.

Timing varies. Crown Coins says reviews take 24 to 72 hours, up to 7 days at busy times or if more verification is needed.

After that, IBT or ACH takes 1 to 5 business days, and Skrill takes 1 to 3 business days.

The catches to check before you sign up

Redemption minimums. The casinos above set minimums from 50 SC to 100 SC, and some use dollar floors instead: LoneStar and RealPrize require a $45 gift card minimum. Below the minimum, you can’t redeem at all.

Playthrough that can climb. Cider states 1x playthrough but reserves the right to require up to 20x, checked Sep 21, 2026. RealPrize and Lavish Luck state 1x and may require more, same date. Read the terms before you spend SC.

One request at a time, with daily caps. LoneStar and RealPrize allow 1 open redemption request at a time. Cider and Lavish Luck allow 1 request per day. All 4 cap redemptions at $10,000 per day.

ID checks that pause things. Crown Coins asks for a US government photo ID and proof of address dated within the last 3 months. No PO boxes, no temporary IDs, checked Nov 3, 2026.

LoneStar may pause redemptions once you reach $600 in a calendar year until you give your address and Social Security number.

Coins that expire. Crown Coins SC expire after 60 days without a login. Cider and Lavish Luck use 90 days without a login. RealPrize and LoneStar expire coins after 60 days with no game play.

None of this stops you from trying. See how to try your first sweepstakes casino for the setup steps.

Common questions

Can you win real prizes at a sweepstakes casino?

Yes, it's possible. You play with Sweeps Coins, and SC you win through play can be redeemed for prizes with real cash value. No prize is promised. Each casino sets its own minimum, playthrough and ID check before sending one.

What is the difference between Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins?

Gold Coins are for fun only. You can't redeem them for anything. Sweeps Coins are promotional and redeemable after you complete the playthrough the casino requires. Casinos never sell Sweeps Coins on their own.

Can you play at a sweepstakes casino without buying anything?

Yes. You can get free Sweeps Coins from a sign-up offer, daily logins, or a free mail-in or written request. Gold Coin packages are optional.

Why do sweepstakes casinos ask for my ID and a utility bill?

They check a government ID and proof of address before sending a prize. That confirms your age, that you live where the casino accepts players, and that the account is yours.
